Our Senses in the time of Corona Virus
Loss of sense of smell and taste could be one of the symptoms that manifest with Sars-CoV-2 coronavirus infection.
Dr. Hendrik Streeck, virologist, during an interview with Frankfurter Allgemeine says he found this characteristic among patients who tested positive. “Almost all the infected people we interviewed (and it is about a hundred, ed.), at least two thirds reported having lost their sense of smell and taste for several days – he says. One of the consequences of Covid-19 is “the reduction in the perception of taste and smell”, a characteristic “which still persists, weeks later”.

Maybe .. indeed .. certainly it is one of the less serious consequences, compared to what is the real suffer in the body, soul and heart during this emergency. But the prospect of losing taste and smell, although for a few days or a few weeks, made me think.
We, as wine lovers, know how important these two senses are, even if in reality they are the least active if we compare them with touch, sight and hearing. And in this perspective, of a situation even if momentary, in which each of us could lose our taste and smell, I thought to propose some articles that I wrote long time ago, back in 2011, for a small but pretty local magazine.
It is a series of four articles, the two firsts are dedicated precisely to the sense of smell.
Words written by a passionate, maybe not expert but well-trained, who has tried through her continuous training and small or big projects to bring the education of the senses both to school, during the lessons held with children and teenagers, and during my experiences’ tasting.
When everything becomes superfluous, when the priorities, the real ones, are put back in their place, because everything else comes later, it can be interesting in this new daily life to understand how we eat and how we drink, not from the physiological point of view, but from the point of hedonistic view, of the pleasure of eating and the pleasure of drinking.
A moment that turns into sharing, knowledge, culture, amateur or professional.
Enjoy the reading (the articles are in Italian language)!
